Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. day is coming and it is the perfect time to teach our kids about the importance of equality and understanding.

The children in today’s society do not know what it is like to grow up in a world without differences.  Every nationality and religion is represented all over the world.  Helping them to understand that differences are wonderful and that everyone is special is a job that parents, teachers, and adults have in the lives of today’s children.

With the start of 2014, there is no better time than with the remembrance of a great man like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  He spent his adult life helping to open the eyes of many to “see” that tolerance is important.  Through his peaceful speeches and marches, he taught about equality, the strength of mankind, and understanding.

Here are some favorite children’s books that will help you talk to your child about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., what he stood for, and how he changed America.

A great way for kids to express their learning about this great man in search of peace is to have them write down their own dreams or draw and write about ways to show peace and acceptance.

Any way that you choose to educate children, whether in a classroom or in your home, about this important time in history, will surely make an impact on a future generation.
